3 Ways to Decrease Toxins on a Budget

Leave Your Shoes at the Door

Our shoes get a lot of traffic and pick up all sorts of debris — spit, defecation and all sorts of germs. To minimize bringing the outdoors indoors, take your shoes off when you enter your home.

Don’t Heat Up Plastic

When heated, the chemicals in plastic more easily contaminate the food that it’s touching. So if you can’t afford to buy all new glass tupperware, keep using your plastic tupperware to store food in the fridge but transfer the food to a plate before you reheat it.

Ditch the Fragrances

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the term “fragrance” means the product may contain phthalates and potentially dozens of substances for which there may be no health and safety data. The Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) Pediatrics notes that studies have found that phthalate exposure disrupts thyroid levels and is linked to endometriosis and breast cancer. One study found a link between high phthalate exposure and preterm birth. Currently companies are not forced to share the specific ingredients in their fragrance concoctions—which means it could be literally anything —so it’s best to avoid anything with “fragrance” altogether: plug-ins, candles, and personal care products.
